I’ve been running around all day getting ready to go on vacation, so I haven’t had time to rant. I do have a few reading recommendations and announcements, though.

First announcement: I’ve got a fantastic series of posts by Thorn lined up for the next three days, while I’m away. For those of you who don’t know her, Thorn is a regular commenter here. I’ve mentioned her before — she’s the one who recently lost her mom, who was told by a doctor “not to come back until she lost 50 lbs.” So she pretty much didn’t. For decades. Thorn’s been brave and generous enough to share that whole story (and more) with us. It’ll break your fucking heart.

Second announcement: Back to more frivolous topics, I need to tell you all how much I am in love with Sweet Pea by Stacy Frati. I’ve always loved looking at her stuff online, but it was so bloody expensive, I could never bring myself to buy any of it. Then I found a couple of her mesh shirts much more reasonably priced at Nordstrom Rack, bought ’em, and became so crazy about them I shelled out for the faux-wrap dress I mentioned the other day. (On sale, but it wouldn’t have been on sale enough if the shirts hadn’t rocked just. that. much.) It arrived yesterday and looks fucking awesome, if I do say so myself. The whole two layers of stretchy mesh thing? Is genius. Flattering, comfy, lightweight but not see-through or excessively clingy… I am officially declaring all of her products a bargain at any price.

Announcement the third:  I am a total loser who forgot to plug COLLEEN OF THE PRETTY PEAR ON FRIGGIN’ NPR the other day. Listen to it here.  Congrats, Colleen!

  • Big Fat Blog and Body Impolitic  on the batshit craziness of this article. It’s about how fat people have a better chance than thin people of surviving heart attacks. And here’s what the docs have to say:

Some suggested that fat people who have heart attacks can markedly improve their survival odds if they make some major lifestyle changes, an option that normal-weight patients may not have.

“Even moderate weight loss can have a big impact,” said Dr. Heinz Buettner of the Heart Centre in Bad Krozingen in Germany. “Obese patients have a better chance to correct their situation compared to thin patients who may just have bad genes.”

Being fat improves your chance of survival after a heart attack. So if you’re fat, what you need to do after a heart attack is… lose weight. Mmkay.

Also how much do you love that last line? Family history of heart disease is one of the biggest risk factors for anyone — but it’s only thin people who “just have bad genes.” And those poor thin people can’t even improve their situation by losing weight after a heart attack, like the fat people — who are, um, more likely to survive a heart attack while fat.

Compare alien with Italian,
Dandelion and battalion.
Sally with ally, yea, ye,
Eye, I, ay, aye, whey, and key.
Say aver, but ever, fever,
Neither, leisure, skein, deceiver.
Heron, granary, canary.
Crevice and device and aerie.

Face, but preface, not efface.
Phlegm, phlegmatic, ass, glass, bass.
Large, but target, gin, give, verging,
Ought, out, joust and scour, scourging.
Ear, but earn and wear and tear
Do not rhyme with here but ere.
Seven is right, but so is even,
Hyphen, roughen, nephew Stephen,
Monkey, donkey, Turk and jerk,
Ask, grasp, wasp, and cork and work.

It’s got about a trillion more stanzas, and they’re all awesome.

Shit, I had more, but I have to be awake in about 7 minutes. Everybody be good to Thorn! See you Sunday.

  1. I also heart Sweetpea. Their stuff tends to be flattering on women of all sizes. Here’s a tip: buy it on Ebay if you can. You’ll save big bucks.
