OMGOMGOMGOMG

The book is out. THE BOOK IS OUT!

ETA a pic from a Shapeling! TABLE PLACEMENT! WHEE!

tabledisplay

Despite my issues with Amazon, I just ordered it for my Kindle. Because it’s too early to go to a bookstore, and any given store might not have it in stock anyway, but I needed to celebrate the whole “It is really, truly available for purchase today!” thing. (By spending money on something I A] already have multiple free copies of, B] have already read about 400 times, and C] still have in Word files on my computer. Shut up.)  It is ON MY KINDLE, y’all! Pre-ordering has given way to ordering! It’s real!

Which means now we get to start hearing how much it sucks. Anyway.

As I said to the Aussies and Kiwis yesterday, if you see the book in a store and have the technology handy to send me a picture (katesblog at gmail dot com), I would love that. If you like the book and have the time and energy to review it on Amazon, Powell’s, Good Reads, or your own blog, I would love that, too! If you don’t like the book, I would love it if you kept your mouth shut about it. I AM FULL OF LOVE TODAY.

And I’m sure at least half of you right now are like, “You know what I’d love? If you’d quit plugging your goddamned book and go back to writing real posts. WE GET IT. YOU CO-WROTE A BOOK. IT IS NOW AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE. EVERYONE WHO CARES ALREADY KNOWS.” To those people I say… Did you know I co-wrote a book? And it’s available for purchase today? And did you know it also features essays by Lesley Kinzel, Julia Starkey and Cynara Geissler of Fatshionista,  Joy Nash of  Fat Rant, and Barbara Benesch-Granberg, who is the mother of twin boys under 5 and thus doesn’t update her blog much? COULD IT GET ANY MORE AWESOME? Tell your friends!

Oh, all right. If you really want something else to talk about today, check out my pretend boyfriend Paul Campos’s piece in The Daily Beast about the fat hate and sexism being leveled at some of the candidates to replace Souter on the Supreme Court.

So what’s the real motivation for all the anxiety about the bodies that house two such apparently distinguished legal minds? A glance at the comments at a site such as Abovethelaw.com, which features a number of vicious attacks on Kagan’s appearance, provides one clue. For some men, the only thing more intolerable than the sight of a powerful woman is the sight of a powerful woman they don’t want to sleep with.

Emphasis mine. Quote of the fucking year, right there.

Also, check out the Q&A Marianne and I did with Damsel, a  newish blog aimed at women in their twenties. Later today, there should be an interview with me up on Broadsheet as well — I’ll come back and link that when it’s up.

Also, THE BOOK IS OUT!!!

ETA: Sweet Machine just sent me the most heartwarming screencap ever.

  1. You can talk about your book all you want. I am excited for you and sharing in your excitement is great fun. Woo hoo indeed!!!!

  2. I got it last Friday at home (I had pre ordered it :) and I’m almost done with the reading. It’s great – just like Shapely Prose, but on paper!!!

  3. Dude, I would totally do the same thing if I wrote a book. I’d be visiting every bookstore close to me to see if they carried it, and squeeing excitedly when I discovered they do. And I would probably buy at least one copy of it from an actual brick-and-mortar bookstore. I mean, how can you not?

I pre-ordered mine from Amazon. Already got the shipping notice, but woe, it is not due to arrive until the 8th. :(

  4. I pre-ordered, but didn’t realize Amazon the demon didn’t charge until they shipped, and in the meantime that card expired so they wouldn’t ship it, and aaaargh but now it’s on the way!

  5. Whoo! I’m so excited to get my copy!

And wow, Paul Campos hit it on the nail. How enraging.

  6. (I <3 Paul Campos too, but this is about OMG THE BOOK, so I will refrain from further comment on the column.)

Dude, there is room for both! The Campos piece totally deserves discussion.

  7. I can’t wait to get mine! I hope to this weekend :) And I’ve been pushing for it to be added to my local public library’s shelves (anyone else out there please do the same! Libraries love suggestions and this would be great to get into the hands of folks not willing or able to buy the book outright!) *plug for public library awesomeness over*

Yay book! :D And Kate I love your last quote on Damsel “And I realized around then that nobody was thinking about the size of my ass. They were thinking about the size of their own.” So true!

  8. HUZZAH THE BOOK IS OUT!

Now. How do I go about buying it if I live in the Republic of Ireland and don’t want to use Amazon? I want to buy copies for my sister and mum as well, and probably a spare for if I find that a friend needs it.

Also, I’ve said it before but it bears repeating: this blog – the fatosphere in general but this blog in particular – has changed my life immeasurably. I’m about 90% over my eating disorder and the only reason I’m not completely over it is because I literally do not have a set point and will continue to get fatter. My point is, I cannot thank you enough, because you’ve made me (and my long-suffering husband who worries a lot about my tendency to starve myself) much, much happier and more confident.

  9. i’m excited to buy it after work today! and also excited because, as i am in fat camp, i will see you in philly on saturday! two exciting things before lunch…that doesn’t always happen.

  10. The book is out!!! I went straight to Amazon to buy the Kindle version. And…no book. I got a “geographical location” error message. Which is odd. I kinda thought that one of the main advantages to buying digital books is that you can get them anywhere in the world. I’ll keep trying, though. Eventually the French will be allowed to support fat acceptance, right?

Oh and, um…PS: Hello, everyone. I’ve been lurking here for more than a year but this is this first time I’ve been brave enough to crawl out from under my rock. So, hi!

  11. Shit shit shit shit I wish I’d written that column. (Sorry, this is your life as my friend for the next few weeks, just as my life as your friend has involved listening to book squee. One of us got a raw deal.)

Is it really too early for it to be in bookstores? I was going to go to the Borders across the street and turn it face out… maybe I’ll wait a couple of days.

  12. YOU CO-WROTE A BOOK? WTH?!!!

I’d be quite disappointed if there wasn’t a few blogs about the release of your book. Live it up!

  13. How do I go about buying it if I live in the Republic of Ireland and don’t want to use Amazon?

I dunno. Unfortunately, no publishers in that part of the world wanted anything to do with us, so you’ll have to buy the U.S. or Australian edition from somewhere online. Any readers have suggestions?

  14. Woo hoo, I’m so excited for you and can’t wait to read it! *pours Kate a glass of champagne – a big glass* And If I wrote a book and it got published, I’d NEVER shut up about it.

  15. Congratulations, Kate and Marianne!

Just tracked my package from Amazon… looks like it should be waiting for me when I get home!

  16. I think Powells.com ships overseas… It would be worth checking out.

To celebrate book day, I have put chocolate chips in my morning oatmeal and MY GOD WHY HAVE I NEVER DONE THIS BEFORE

  17. For some men, the only thing more intolerable than the sight of a powerful woman is the sight of a powerful woman they don’t want to sleep with.

Yeah, I got really tired of this during the election in regards to Hillary Clinton. Women are more than your fuck toys, assholes.

  18. Up here in Ontario, the online lookup tells me that the local Chapters and Indigo’s have 2-3 copies, but the little Coles (mall-style book stores) do not. I will be bookshopping tonight!

  19. You know what, too — I can’t even overstate how important this is. I heard of HAES and fat acceptance, for the first time, from a book. It was a life-changing (literally) event.

Obviously, the internet has a bit more sway now than it did at that time, nine years back (holy shit!), but you’re about to ROCK THE FUCKING WORLD of a bunch of people who read books.

I am so happy this is out there. And we need even more, so if it’s not too much trouble, how about you get on with some more book-writin’ hmm? kthxbai

  20. Woohoo! I pre-ordered my copy from Amazon so it should be here soon!! I’ve already read it (because I’m speshul) but I’m going to RE-READ it and write a review!

Congrats to Kate and Marianne! I’m so proud :)

  21. And we need even more, so if it’s not too much trouble, how about you get on with some more book-writin’ hmm? kthxbai

Um, right back atcha, lady who is about to rock the world of nutrition!

  22. Of course you buy it! It’s good luck to buy your own book (or movie or album or whatever) the day it comes out.

  23. Congratulations, Kate.

Shira (and everybody else), you can buy the book from Book Depository (UK-based) which, incidentially, has been my favourite online book store for years.

  24. Hey Kate (and Marianne)-

I got my book last night in the mail…I am SO excited to jump in and read it. I am in the midst of final week at my internship but plan to get started reading on Saturday morning.

    YAY!!!!!!

  25. Unfortunately, no publishers in that part of the world wanted anything to do with us

Disappointing and frustrating but not at all surprising :( I’ll wangle a way for it to be sent to me from a US website, then, or ooh, my sister’s got a friend visiting from NJ in the summer so maybe I can get her to bring over a few copies.

  26. Congratulations. LIVE IT UP. Can’t wait to go to Barnes and pick it up. I will be reading it as I see my fat-hating parents this week. It will help me keep my sanity, as will this site.

Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for doing what you do.

  27. I preordered from Amazon, but you know, I think I’m going to order the Kindle version as well. And lend the hard copy to my co-worker who’s an underpaid admin and could use it. And then keep it prominently in my office.

  28. So… when does the book come out? =)

Seriously, huge congratulations are in order. It’s exciting as hell. Blog about it ’til your little heart’s content. As if you need my permission…

  29. I want to thank your book and Google. I did not know you existed until Google news popped up an article about your new book. I’m so grateful that you are doing this blog that I fantasized about doing for years. Is Paul Campos really your boyfriend? His book changed my life.

  30. Congratulations! I hope a bajillion people buy it and read it and soak it all in :)

There is a very moving article in the Washington Post today, about a young woman named Sarah who died from bulimia-related complications:

    http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/05/01/AR2009050103262.html

Her symptoms started when she was 12, and she was 19 when she died. The article talks a little bit about the pressures on young women to look perfect – though not nearly enough, of course – but the most heartbreaking things were said by the young woman’s parents. They tried to get her help for years, but came up against things like this:

One nutritionist, after being informed of Sarah’s eating disorder, remarked that her weight “seemed fine,” Barbara adds. That only fueled Sarah’s denial.

There is so much wrong with that, I don’t even know where to begin. And the irony of seeing it in the Post‘s Health Section – which is usually chock full of OMG OBESITY articles and “helpful” suggestions for Obtaining the Weight Loss That Will Change Your Life and Finally Make You Happy – is pretty rich, too.

But seeing this article on the same day that your book is out…somehow, it gives me a little sliver of hope. There are voices out there – loud ones, good ones – fighting the good fight, with the hope, however distant, that things get more sane and bearable.

  31. I just ordered it!

A couple of weird things on amazon.ca:
    1) It is still listed as a pre-order.
    2) Kate, you are listed as the sole author. No wonder those press folks can’t get it straight.

    Also -OMG Paul Campos.

  32. Whee! That means it will be sitting on the porch when I get home. I’m having a crap week, so this is something to look forward to.

  33. Congrats! That is just so awesome. I’m on a book-buying fast right now, but maybe I can convince my library to buy a copy.

Re: the Paul Campos piece, I thought the best part was the last paragraph: if we were really worried about statistical data on mortality, we wouldn’t even consider nominating a man. IIRC, even significantly obese women have lower mortality rates than “normal” weight men. Clearly, it’s irresponsible and wrong to allow a man to serve on the SCOTUS.

  34. OH and someone who has read the book needs to write a review for Powells to push the current troll review off the top of the page!

  35. Is Paul Campos really your boyfriend? His book changed my life.

Oh, lord no! We’ve never met, and afaik, we’re both married to other people. (I mean, I know I’M married to another person, pretty sure he is.) But his book changed my life, too, so I meant that in the late-nineties sense of “My IMAGINARY boyfriend.” Perhaps I should update the post.

  36. Yay, the book is out just in time for my vacation. I will read it while wearing a bathing suit! Congrats to both authors, and thanks, too!

  37. Gchat with my loving husband from 5 minutes ago…

me: now i have to edit the post to clarify that paul campos is not actually my boyfriend.
    hubby: you did what?
me: I referred to him as “my boyfriend” today, in that late nineties sense where everyone referred to male celebs as their boyfriends
    but someone was actually confused
    hubby: ew
me: post now says he is my pretend boyfriend
    Jealous?
    hubby: no, more bored.
me: Should I tell you more?
    hubby:: ZZzzzz
me: PAUL CAMPOS WOULD NEVER FALL ASLEEP WHILE I’M TALKING TO HIM.

  38. Congratulations, Kate and Marianne!

My local Borders had ‘several’ on the shelf when I called this morning and one of them is mine. I’ll try to remember to bring my camera when I go to pick it up!

  39. Congratulations.

Years from now, you will still be able to touch it and it will still feel good.

I have a tiny little shelf above my desk for books I’ve written. Next one and they no longer all fit.

  40. My own local B&N hasn’t received their shipment yet. I WAS DENIED. *laugh* Looks like I’ll be ordering my good luck “bought it on release day” copy online!

  41. As a fat lawyer with career aspirations, I literally was unable to finish reading the Paul Campos article because it made me so angry/sad.

So instead, let me just say that I am THRILLED about the book! Thrilled! I preordered two, which on en route, and am going to buy two more. I was planning to buy them at the VLF event in Chicago, but I kind of want to go get one at the Borders down the block so I can have one in my hands. BOOK! BOOK! Yay!

  42. Sort of re: the Paul Campos piece, which I just sent to lots of people (despite it making me so upset ha) my friend just informed me that Fox News had a picture of the current supreme court with the caption, “Why aren’t white males being considered for the Supreme Court”

  43. 2) Kate, you are listed as the sole author. No wonder those press folks can’t get it straight.

Dammit, we got that fixed on Powell’s and the Amazon Kindle edition. Didn’t know it had happened at amazon.ca, too. Grrrrr.

  44. I got it from the Sony ebook store just after midnight last night! Can’t wait to read it! Congratulations!

  45. I’ve been sending the Campos article to all my General Kagan groupie friends (I have dork friends) and they’re outraged. This, I think, may not be a bad FA recruiting tool. :-)

  46. So I hear you wrote a book?

    j/k

There is a Borders on my way home, but I will wait until tomorrow to check it out so that I can have my camera with me.

  47. CONGRATULATIONS KATE AND MARIANNE!!! Kate, do you know if they have it at Women&Children First yet? Because I like to buy from them when I buy books, and I would totally stop there on the way home if they did. I guess I could just call them…whaaaa? What is this “telephone”?

OTM, we should hang out. I’m another fat lawyer with aspirations of greatness–I had a really hard time reading that piece. It was like every paragraph was like “oh look, I need to go look at lolcats now.” That, coupled with the horrible piece I ranted about today, makes me think that a fat brown lady like me is basically never going to be taken seriously by the Legal Big Boys.

That piece plus the one I just

  48. Kate, do you know if they have it at Women&Children First yet? Because I like to buy from them when I buy books, and I would totally stop there on the way home if they did. I guess I could just call them…whaaaa? What is this “telephone”?

I don’t know, but I guess somebody had better find out, b/c you’re the second person who’s asked — and I like to shop there, too. I know they’ve had it on the site for preorder for ages, for whatever that’s worth.

    OTM, we should hang out.

Yes you should, and you should both invite me. IANAFL, but we all like to drink, so there’s that.

  49. there’s an ad for the book running on Bitch PhD

Ha! I would like to claim responsibility for that, but I didn’t notice it until just now. I don’t even know if we specifically approve ad requests…guess they’re just properly targeting our readership. Booya.

  50. Am I the only one who noticed that “kneel before zod” was one of the Amazon tags for the book? Is that a Harding-approved phrase? Did I miss something?

Don’t get me wrong, I am _always_ down for a Zod reference. And it’s hilarious. But I still had a WTF moment.

  51. Congratulations!!!! I’m so excited for you and Marianne!!! I’m hoping the book is in my mailbox when I get home today — it better be! *shakes fist at Amazon* SO EXCITED.

  52. I don’t even know if we specifically approve ad requests…guess they’re just properly targeting our readership. Booya.

Yeah, I’m actually just impressed that our marketing people were that on the ball! (Just saw it’s also running at Feministing and Feministe.)

Also, awesome piece on Sotomayor, Leblanc. I just got distracted by the big picture of OUR BOOK COVER.

  53. I don’t have a lot of $$, so I’m going to ask our library to buy a copy of your book — that way, a lot of people can enjoy it!!

  54. Am I the only one who noticed that “kneel before zod” was one of the Amazon tags for the book?

Noticed hell, I tagged it! Though not initially — that was one of Marianne’s friends, trying to counter abusive tags like “crybaby” and “denial.” (Which I reported to Amazon but I guess they were too busy with everything getting tagged “OMG SCARY GAY” to do anything about it.)

  55. Sort of re: the Paul Campos piece, which I just sent to lots of people (despite it making me so upset ha) my friend just informed me that Fox News had a picture of the current supreme court with the caption, “Why aren’t white males being considered for the Supreme Court”

Okay, that’s so over the top I have a hard time believing it’s not satire. That caption belongs on the Onion.

None of the B&N stores have the book near me, but many of the Borderses do! (Sadly, there are no indie book stores that I’ve seen right around here that sell new books. But that’s okay, maybe Borders will have a display! If not, I will make one.)

  56. CONGRATULATIONS KATE & MARIANNE!!!!!

Amazing and wonderful and so, so cool :)

Anxiously awaiting my four pre-ordered copies……..

  57. I will pick it up next weekend at Chapters/Indigo (one of them has in the Montreal suburbs has it already, I hope hope hope the downtown locations will too within the next few days). I promise I will leave a review and all over at chapters.ca and amazon.ca. :D

  58. It is, without a doubt, the awesomest caption ever to accompany a photo of the Supreme Court. I want to make a t-shirt out of it.

  59. Literate Shrew, I’m so glad people are noticing that one. *grin* Fillyjonk, thank you for adding to the tagging on that one – we’re actually tagged that more times than Superman, which is really kind of cool. *laugh*

Thank you all so much. Today is just…. I can’t stop squeeing.

  60. Hooray! I’m so excited. I can’t wait to buy it!! Yay!!! Should I buy it today or ask for it for Mother’s Day? Hmmmm.

(I needed this good news, y’all. The last week or two a pro-life group has hired a plane to fly over my town with pictures of aborted fetuses. They’re also driving around town in a truck with pictures of – you guessed it – aborted fetuses. They say they *try* not to drive by elementary schools. Generous of them, don’t yyou think? I think one of them keyed our car, which sports an Obama bumper sticker. Sociopath wankstains.)

  61. Women&Children First Update: I just called and the nice lady said they had a “little stack of them” there. And then she asked if I wanted her to put one aside for me and I said HELL YES.

This is the first and maybe the last time I will say this, ever:

    SQUEEEEEE!

  62. OMG YAY BOOK! I would go buy it today but, um, we have to go pick up or new car instead. And I have a concert tomorrow, goddamnit, so THURSDAY. Thursday, it will be mine!

(I will be seriously disappointed if the new Supreme Court justice isn’t Sotomayor or someone similar. But I can’t call Posner an asshole yet ’cause I’m still hoping to get my acceptance letter from U of Chicago Law School . . .)

  63. Wow, Lori, what a graphic. Mind if I borrow it and put it on my blog to make fun of it? It’s already been displaced on the original site!

  64. Also, Kate, just envision fancy downtown lawyer in a suit (I’m not wearing a suit today, but let’s pretend) picking up her fancy telephone and calling a bookstore and saying “I was wondering if you have any copies of the book by Kate Harding that came out today.”

    I bet that feels good.

  65. I feel so sorry for all the white men. It’s so, so sad when, on rare occasions, they’re denied all the automatic perks that are supposed to come to them for being white and male. See? Here’s my sad face: :( :(

  66. Lori, holy crap, I would never have believed it without seeing it. That is the best thing ever, especially accompanied by the “media coverup” link.

Book: woohoo!! I usually order things from Amazon, but I’m getting this one from Powell’s because Amazon really ticked me off with the OMGGAY thing. If only they weren’t so cheap and convenient.

  67. RE: Paul Campos article (which gets it exactly right)

I remember back when I was an ugly-as-all-heck elementary school kid when my parents and teachers were always saying that it doesn’t matter what you look like or how popular you are or what the boys say about you. As long as you focus on school and work hard and follow your dreams, you’ll put them all to shame when you have a great job (like, say, a Supreme Court appointment) and an enviable life.

    Shit.

  68. Okay, I’m off to pick up my copy. Just called the store and they’ve got it. This is more exciting than the seventh Harry Potter!

  69. Yaaaay, book! Mine is hopefully on its way, but I haven’t had a shipping confirmation sent to me, yet. I’M SO EXCITED THOUGH. I’m hoping I’ll get it time to have read it, and apply stuff to a program I’m doing. :)

  70. Woooooo!!!!!!

me: PAUL CAMPOS WOULD NEVER FALL ASLEEP WHILE I’M TALKING TO HIM.
LOL. You never know (I went to school with boys who have the degree Campos has. I will stop there.) You are famous but I am running for Professor Paul b/c you have one husband and I have none.

  71. Congrats to you and Marianne!

I’ll be ordering my copy of the book tonight (and a copy for my mom), but I was informed by my book dealer of choice that shipping to Germany would take 10 – 14 days *sigh*. I guess I’ll have to be patient…

  72. Am I the only one who noticed that “kneel before zod” was one of the Amazon tags for the book?

    *laughs till she cries*

  73. Congratulations Kate! I’m going to head down to my local feminist bookstore and buy it right now… and if they don’t have it I’ll recommend they order it!

  74. Okay, I just called the local Borders to make sure they have it before I head over and when I gave the guy the title he asks “Oh, the diet one?” AAAARGH.

  75. Long time listener, first time caller, OMG I have y’all’s book in my hands!

Ran out to Barnes and Noble over lunch to pick it up. Was somewhat disappointed when the in-store computer thingy told me it was in the diet book section, but even an ironically-bad category is better than no category at all, eh? It would have fallen right between a Carb Addicts’ book and the Biggest Loser series if it had been shelved where the computer said it was, but it wasn’t. I asked the nice lady, as the computer wouldn’t lie to me and tell me there were copies when there weren’t, right?

Nice Lady: “What was the title again? Fato-what?”
    Me: “Fat-hyphen-o-hyphen-sphere.”
Nice Lady: ::types ‘fatosphere’:: “Sorry, no copies!”
Me: ::facepalm:: “Just type in ‘Kate Harding.’”
Nice Lady: “Oh! We have five copies on the display table!”

Yep. On the first table as you walk in the door, on the “new nonfiction” table, five copies were displayed front and center. Not rubbing elbows with the carb addicts and biggest losers and thinking yourself thin (*seriously*?); it’s in the land of high foot traffic and prominence. \o/

Just thought you might appreciate an actual spotting-in-the-wild tale.

  76. Attention Shapelings in Germany: If you don’t want to order from Amazon.de (where it is listed, but bizarrely as currently unavailable), Hugendubel’s website says they can deliver it in 10-14 days. Oh, it’s also cheaper from Hugendubel.

(For non-Germans, that’s this country’s equivalent of Borders or B&N)

  77. OK, so I went to the Borders at State and Randolph and looked for the book (IN DIET AND OTHER WEIGHT LOSS) and couldn’t find the book and found an employee and asked about the book and he called somebody else and asked about the book and nobody could find the book even though the computer said it was delivered and in stock and it seems that they got the book and shelved the book and… sold all their copies of the book.

  78. Yep. On the first table as you walk in the door, on the “new nonfiction” table, five copies were displayed front and center.

    SWOON!

and it seems that they got the book and shelved the book and… sold all their copies of the book.

    OMGOMGOMG!

  79. I went to Barnes and Nobles on 12th and E (near the ESPN Zone for other DCites) and the bookseller there told me a curious thing: the only stores in this area that got a shipment of the books were in Bethesda and Rockville.

So I placed an order for the book at THAT store, figuring they’d then get more copies than just my one. :D

I’ll have it in two days! EEEE!!!

  80. My copy is on it’s way to my office. Tracking says it’ll get there tomorrow.

:::joins in making happy squeee-ing sounds:::

  81. celeloriel, really? That’s so bizarre — in fatass DC, of all places! Do you think it would help if I stopped in there looking for it, too?

  82. Do you think it would help if I stopped in there looking for it, too?

I think it would help if you stopped into ALL OF THEM.

Oh wait, you weren’t talking to me.

  83. I wonder if I can find some way to get the Australian edition.

Not that I’m not getting the US just that cover is sweet.

  84. @celeloriel (and other DCites): the Tyson’s Corner store had five (well, four now) copies as of one this afternoon. It’s not at the Tyson’s Borders, but their phone dude told me that pretty much every inside-the-Beltway Borders has it except for Pentagon City (and, you know, Tyson’s.)

  85. @ celeloriel

I just bought a copy at the Borders at 17th and L during my lunch break. I’d rather shop at B&N than Borders, obvs, but it’s the only one in lunchtime walking distance.

Anyway, I was going to comment anyway, because I bought the only copy that was on the shelves, which I’m hoping means there were other copies that were already purchased! (‘Cause presumably they wouldn’t only order one, right…? Or at the very least, maybe now they’ll order more.)

  86. Congratulations, published authors! I’ll be checking B&N by my office on the way home.

Re: Paul Campos (imaginary internet boyfriend extraordinaire) – oh, hell yes. Let’s make absolutely certain we weed out the obeses (and their lazy analytical abilities) from the Supreme Court. We certainly can’t trust them with important legal doctrine, no, no. *cough*Justice White* *cough*cough*Justice Taft*
How could they have slipped past the watchful public eye? Oh, yeah…

  87. Haha, m.leblanc – I somehow find the words “justice” and “scalia” much more palatably congruous when “motherfucking” falls between.

  88. congratulations!
I can’t decide if it would be better to pick up a copy at a local indie today and read it before Sunday or wait until Sunday (yay! hooray! it’s going to be so awesome, you guys!!!!) and buy it from CNW.
AUGH! decisions! I may have to do both! (one for me, one for lending, that’s good, right?)

  89. ahahahahaha!
I just called the most likely place I’d pick up a copy today and the guy said it looked like they should, but he couldn’t find them, went off to look for a while and came back to say “oh, our copies are going to an offsite event, but I can hold one for you if you like.” I said “ah, that would be the reading on sunday, huh?” hee. apparently they have some kind of distribution agreement with CNW. too funny.

y’all will still sign it on Sunday if I bring the copy I buy today, right? cuz, dude, famous people! gotta have autographs!

  90. Haha, m.leblanc – I somehow find the words “justice” and “scalia” much more palatably congruous when “motherfucking” falls between.

    Word.

  91. I somehow find the words “justice” and “scalia” much more palatably congruous when “motherfucking” falls between.

Every time you utter the words “justice” and “scalia” without “motherfucking” in between them, Irony clutches its metaphorical heart and falls over dead.

  92. That’s it, it’s 4:54 PM, I am totally allowed to sneak out of work and go see if the local indie place has it. If not, well, there’s a Borders and maybe I don’t have enough ethics to resist. I’ll try. But dammit, I’ve been wading through scientific prose all day and I need to read something without subscripts!

  93. monkey, we will sign anything. But we’ll sign extra enthusiastically if you buy two!

(Also, I’m warning you right now: I DO remember meeting you in January, but I’m blanking on what you look like at the moment. So please reintroduce yourself and forgive me if I don’t recognize you right off the bat!)

  94. I just got my copy from the mailbox! Congratulations, Kate and Marianne. Nine years ago I had my only (so far) book published and even though it sank without a trace within weeks, I still get a grin when I think of it. I think the glow will last me my whole life, and I hope the joy of this day does for you too. This blog changed my life in a big (har) way, and I wish you everything good.

  95. You guyz, you’re #3 on Powell’s Best Seller list!

And I haven’t even bought my copy yet.

(This will happen within the next few days.)

  96. I just bought a copy.

And I’m unemployed. I added that only so you’d know how much it means to me to be able to own this book.

    Congratulations.

  97. “(Also, I’m warning you right now: I DO remember meeting you in January, but I’m blanking on what you look like at the moment. So please reintroduce yourself and forgive me if I don’t recognize you right off the bat!)”

lol. dude. so not a problem! I’m awful at faces myself, so I totally get it. I would have been shocked if you did remember me!
(if you are curious, and if it helps, I was wearing a swirly Torrid dress and have long-ish dark hair.)

  98. I bought one for me, and one for my mom, both from Powell’s. I can’t wait to receive them! This mother’s day I’m giving my amazing mom something that can help her realize how amazing she.

  99. I cannot buy new books so I’ve asked my public library to buy a copy. Still, I wanted to go to Borders and casually read THE WHOLE THING. Alas, they are also sold out (but getting more copies).

  100. How amazing she *is*. I got too excited and submitted before I had even finished my own sentence.

  101. I pre-ordered the book on Amazon (great use of a gift certificate!) and am impatiently waiting for it to arrive!

  102. Hahahaha…

    On the amazon site:
    ****
Customers who bought this item also bought:
    Health at Every Size
    Feed Me!
    Yes Means Yes
    Yoga: Just My Size
    Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog
    ****

I’m pretty sure that last one is due to me – when I pre-ordered the book I also picked up another copy of Dr. H for a friend. :)

  103. LOL – glad it’s not just me! I’ve always wondered if those lists go off of what people buy at the same time as the book, or if they mine each person’s entire buying history.

  104. This book is so needed. I just read an obit on Dom DeLuise. I saw him once at a LA Times book festival at UCLA a few years back. He seemed like a tremendous person who really loved life. So on his obit, what does msnbc include? A long thing about how he “fought obesity” and at his heaviest was “325 pounds.” Who the fuck cares? He died at age 75 or so??!!! Isn’t that average for men????? It INCENSES me that the writers slipped in an OMG teh fatz message in an obituary!

Am now pulling hair and knashing teeth . . .

  105. Pestering my library to make its collection better reflect my offbeat, rabble-rousing tastes is one of my favorite leisure activities. I shall commence.

    Felicitations, Your Majesty.

  106. Woohoo!! A very merry book-day to you! I preordered mine from Borders, but they must not be one of the companies that ships preorders ahead of the release date, because I have yet to get it. :( But as soon as I do you can bet I’ll be reading (and scribbling…I’ll be underlining/starring/etc. stuff I especially want to point out to my mom…)

  107. LOL – glad it’s not just me!

I think there’s actually substantial overlap between the Lessons from the Fat-o-sphere and Dr. Horrible audiences. Which thrills me no end. :)

  108. car, I had a similar recommendation list come up that included Dr. Horrible, and I was delighted yet confused. Hurray for self-loving, yoga-posing geeky fatties!

  109. I received my copy on April 25…was I supposed to?

Regardless, it was a gift to my best friend, so I haven’t even read it yet! Yarg.

  110. For those who don’t want to order from Amazon, go to http://www.charisbooksandmore.com It’s Atlanta’s incredibly awesome feminist independent bookstore and it will come to your house in between two to five days. I just checked and they definitely can order it. I don’t know if they have it on display, as I won’t be able to drive to the store for a few days. I’ll probably go Sunday before church and if they do, I’ll take a picture!

  111. OMG I just nipped out to my local book store and bought your book! I’m so excited.

I even took a photo – it was FACE OUT baby!

When I get home (and if I can find the cable that connects my phone to the computer) I’ll send you the pic – it’s the Australian version so it’ll be one for your collection!

    Congratulations Kate and Marianne!

  112. I work at a library so it’s rare for me to actually buy a book. But I will be buying two copies of this book – one for me and one for my sister.

And of course I will be checking to make sure my library has gotten some copies as well.

    Congrats Kate and Marianne!

  113. *Throwing my congrats hat into the ring*
So happy for you both! Can’t wait to get mine tomorrow after I pick up my new glasses…that way I’ll actually be able to READ it! ha ha

So now that you both have a book published (which I am sure will be a great success!) how is this going to change your lives? What do you want to do or buy first with your first really huge royalty check??

  114. You guyz, you’re #3 on Powell’s Best Seller list!

    *DIES*

(It’ll probably change in an hour, but I got a damn screencap!)

Well, this morning I went and looked, and it had changed… to #2.

  115. It was SO SO SO awesome, last night, to have my bedtime reading be Lessons from the Fat-o-Sphere.

Say, my son’s fifth birthday is next week. Would it be weird to give these out to parents as party favors? yes? True, true. Do I care? Not sure.

  116. Anyone know if they have it at Strand? It’s not on their site but I’m not sure that means anything.

I’d rather buy it there than B&N.

  117. KC Jones, just FYI, but sometime in August (I haven’t finalized the date yet), I’ll be doing a reading at Charis – I love that place.

  118. I’m thinking I need to get a copy for the campus counselor here at middleofnowhere U. – might come in handy with students.

  119. Squeee! It’s finally here!
Being the broke student that I am, it’ll probably be a long time before I actually be able to buy a copy. But, I will stop by my local B&N and browse it.
I’m so excited for you and Marianne!

  120. Congratulations Kate! What an awesome accomplishment. I’ve added the book to my Amazon wish list and will be purchasing it very soon. I need to read it, as I’ve been backsliding into dieting again recently. The foray into regular workouts prompted by winter- and depression-fueled weight gain was good in that I found an exercise routine that I genuinely enjoy and that makes me feel good when I’m done, but the dieting has been kinda hellish. Thanks for keeping up this blog, ladies. It means a lot to have y’all here to help snap me out of the body-hate.

  121. The good news: they had your book at my local Borders!
The bad news: it was shelved in the diet book section. Wah wah wah. I told the customer service lady that that probably wasn’t the best place for it, and she said she would pass it on.

The better news: my mom and I went to go see my brother do standup tonight. While there, I saw a friend who read Fat!So? a few months ago after my recommendation, so I showed her your book and told her to get herself a copy. My mom saw it, said it looked interesting, and asked if she could borrow it. She’s been dieting her whole life, and comes from a long line of body haters. I’ve been slowly introducing some fat positivity to her, and this might be enough to convert her to Fat Satan!

  122. I’ll see about getting it Friday, though it might get bumped for another month of World of Warcraft. I love you and Marianne and the rest of the Fatospherians, but I kinda wanted to get to Northrend soon, too. If not Friday, then next month for sure.

  123. I’ll see about getting it Friday, though it might get bumped for another month of World of Warcraft.

FAT SATAN COMMANDS YOU TO BUY IT NOW.

I kid, I kid. Seriously, it honors me more than I can say to hear that people are shuffling around their budgets, trying to fit this book in somewhere. (Alyce upthread, too — thank you so much.) That’s just… guh. Not enough thanks in the world.

  124. Congratulations, wise authors of a real live book!

I have a long flight tonight – previously my only plan was to get drunk on free plane booze – but now I am going to read this too. Are they really not publishing this book in the UK? Maybe I will leave it strategically lying around London and spread the word!

Also it makes me sad that some people want this book but can’t afford it – I’m happy to send my copy on to you if you want :)

  125. I have been waiting anxiously for the book to come out, and I just got it. I’m so excited about it, too — I can’t wait to read it. And I’d LOOOVE to get it autographed — are you book touring to San Diego at some point?

  126. That’s awesome!

Also awesome: The middle bottom book, Twilight of Avalon, was written by one of my mom’s best friends. :D
