Sasha + puppy = death by cuteness. They can just keep the pictures in military vaults and make our nuclear arsenal obsolete.

I love how happy she always looks. I also love how in almost any picture of her with her parents, she’s holding one (or both) of their hands, or sitting in one of their laps. They seem like such an affectionate family.

I swear, his kids make me want MORE kids! They are GORGEOUS!!! (and seem a LOT better behaved than mine ever are. :))

I love that their Secret Service codenames are “Radiance” and “Rosebud”. So appropriate.

You know, I woke up grumpy this morning. My brother decided to take a loooong shower at six in the freaking morning (while we’re on water rationing!) and I’m out of coffee, so you know I did not stumble out of bed in a good mood.

Looking at this, though, the murderous rage is starting to clear away. I’ve gone straight from postal working with Uzi to grumpy old man yelling at kids on his lawn.

Ah, the power of the Obama kids to soothe the troubled soul!

  5. 2008 November 7

Err…that was supposed to be ‘postal worker’ rather than ‘postal working.’

Dammit, I haven’t had any coffee! You try spelling first thing in the morning sans caffeine!

  6. 2008 November 7

Adorable kids, both of them. I hope the experience is kinder to them than it was to Chelsea Clinton and Amy Carter.

I can totally feel myself turning into the USA version of an old British lady obsessed with the Royal Family, except about the Obamas. But then on the other hand, I don’t want to feed into the frenzy that I fear is going to put these poor kids into therapy for ever and ever. But then on the other hand, I kind of love them. CONFLICTED.

Me too. At least these two have each other, whereas Chelsea and Amy had to go it alone. I’ve often said I’d feel too guilty having an only child, because there would be no one else in the world for that kid to talk to who fully understood my special brand of parental crazy. White House crazy is a whole different universe.

Those kids have cuteness to spare. Malea looks exactly like her mother, but Sasha seems to favor both. What do you think?

They are younger than Chelsea was (I don’t remember Amy Carter), and, honestly, prettier. Mind you, Chelsea was thirteen and in an awkward stage when her father was elected. I always got really angry when people made fun of her looks, possibly because I wasn’t much older. I thought it ridiculous for anyone to harp on her looks when she had been thrust onto the national stage through no fault of her own; she wasn’t a child model or actress, just a normal-looking girl with the misfortune to have a politician for a father.

Anyway, these two may never go through that awkward stage. I still think it’s unfortunate that folks pay so much attention to the physical attractiveness of politicians’ female relatives.

Eve, at least Chelsea got the last laugh, when somewhere in college she went from awkward/ordinary to quite pretty.

Rush Limbaugh has no doubt already made cracks about Malia’s missing teeth *rolls eyes*.

Those Obama genes are just loaded with cute. Her dad was an adorable kid too, and so is Malia.

Damnit, Kate… that picture got me spontaneously knocked up. Thanks a lot. :)

Although I don’t remember it (I was a youngin’ during the Carter administration), I read this morning that Amy Carter went to public school while her father was in office as part of Jimmy Carter’s “everyman” image. According to the article, she had trouble making friends and wasn’t allowed to play outside during recess because the playground was too close to the street. I’m all for public school, but when you’re the First Daughter, everyman dad or no, private school really seems in order.

  17. 2008 November 7

The one on the bumper cars is too cute for words.

  18. 2008 November 7

They are such a beautiful family. The BEAM on Sasha’s face when they came out the other night just about killed me.

I just adore both Sasha and Malia! I love how you can read in Obama’s face when he’s looking at one of them, even if they are not on camera – there’s this *look* he gets. My father (a Dad to an only daughter) tells me it’s a common mix of joy and wonderment.

I have also commented, along with my mother, about the fast friendship Sasha seems to have developed with one of Joe Biden’s granddaughters. Whenever they appear in public, those two gravitate toward one another like magnets. It’s delightful to watch.

Finally, while I understand the desire – and the need – to keep them out of the obsessive media spotlight, I will love nothing more than seeing two such well-behaved, energetic, sparkling children in photos over the next several years!

“Eve, at least Chelsea got the last laugh, when somewhere in college she went from awkward/ordinary to quite pretty.”

Well, she did, but through shit-tons of plastic surgery. I remember reading about all the micro-suction, liposuction, etc. she had to get. (Of course, at the time I seriously considered doing that myself, as a chubby-cheeked, curly-haired person)

Which makes me worry about the Obama kids. Since they’re famous, young and female, god forbid they should *ever* look anything other than supermodel-skinny and perfect…*sigh*

I remember hearing a lot of people mention how Obama doesn’t really seem passionate about anything–you never see him when he’s not completely calm. But after seeing him in that little race car with Sasha I must say, if only one thing gets him fired up and giddy, it’s his daughters.

I vaguely remember reading something about the Obama and Biden kids having a sleepover party during the campaign. I remember the thought making me all smiley.

OMG! That little girl is just personality plus!!! She is *so* cute. She’s like her daddy, too, in that she can’t seem to take a bad picture. It’s going to be so wonderful having younger kids in the White House. The whole family expresses so much love that it’s a joy to watch them. I’ve been having a lousy day (just not feeling good) and this cheered me up no end. Thanks!

I thought the Clintons did a really good job of shielding Chelsea from the press for most of their tenure in the White House. I’m hoping the Obamas can do that for their girls; I have high hopes, since I heard that Hillary Clinton and Michelle Obama have discussed raising kids in the White House.

My mom says it’ll be wonderful to have kids in the White House again; I’m not quite sure who she’s using as a reference point, but I’m intrigued by it, myself. Mostly I just think it’s wonderful that the Obamas have managed to raise such happy, out-going little girls.

  29. 2008 November 8

I keep wanting to write the a postcard, to tell them that the thing their parents should be proudest of is that they’ve raised such amazing kids. Those two girls, across an ocean from mine, totally different lives from mine, will change how my two girls get to live their lives.

  30. 2008 November 8

:( I can’t see it, it says bandwidth exceeded.

Maybe one of the Obama girls will be President herself someday! Wouldn’t that be cool?

Speaking of Secret Service codenames, Michelle and Barack’s codenames are Renaissance and Renegade.

That kind of pales in comparison to Sarah and Todd Palin — Denali and Driller.

I have a random story to share. Sort of cute. I hope you see why I’m sharing it with you.

My parents have a cat named Max who is extremely fat. Normal cat head, triple cat body. Last night, he was mauled by three huge dogs. My mom had to kick and beat the last dog before it would get off of him. She took him to the vet, and you know what the vet said? The same vet who told my parents that Max was too fat and that obesity was just as dangerous in animals as it was in humans and they needed to pay an absurd amount of money to put a happy outdoor cat on a diet?

Max’s fat saved his life. He was simply too large for the dogs’ teeth to do serious damage.

Lazercat, you got a link? I’ve never heard anything like that.

  42. 2008 November 10

yeah I think Chelsea looks more like her mom now that she’s grown up – seems like a natural change to me. I never thought she had plastic surgury, and if she did it doesn’t seem like “tons” or anything dramatic.

The Obama girls are adorable! I think Malia seems to be just like her mom, even resembles her, and Sasha just seems like a bright, free, happy spirit.

For whoever said what if one of them runs for president one day – you also have to factor in Finnegan Biden (another one of Joe’s grandaughters) as a contender. Some press guy got a hold of her and asked her what she wanted to be when she grew up – she said “President!” :D

That bumper car picture is about the most hilarious thing I’ve ever seen. That, and the fact that Obama called himself ‘awesome’ in the speech for a charity banquet in NYC makes me very happy.

Kate, I’ve gone batty over the last few days trying to find still photos of Sasha and whichever of Joe’s granddaughters she seems to favor, and I can’t find a thing. Most of the stills seem to be of just the Obamas, and the few with the Bidens in them seem to be primarily the adults with Malia and Sasha. I suspect the reason there aren’t stills of what I’m referring to is because it’s often when all the families are “released” onstage after an event, and there’s such a jumble of bodies, a still would just look weird. However, if you look at the video footage, it does show pretty clearly from both the convention and the acceptance appearances.
