huh. that whole thing is so f’ing weird. i’m at wordpress.com myself, and in general, i totally love it. the only thing that i had to adjust to in the new release was figuring out wtf they did to the dashboard. now it’s all good. but that “possibly related posts” junk doesn’t show on either my main page OR my individual post pages…maybe it’s only installed on some of the templates?

oh well, good luck with all the insanity.

That really does suck–thanks for tipping us off, because I’d never have thought of it. On the plus side I was also able to turn off the “snapshots” to links under the same menu selection–I can kind of see why they are handy, but my computer seems slow enough that it is a real hassle for those to have to load every time I mouse over a link.

Exactly. As Tigtog points out, this means feminist blogs are overlapping with MRA blogs, and antiracist blogs are overlapping with white supremacist blogs. BRILLIANT.

Oh, and everyone who’s suggested using WP hosted elsewhere, I’ve thought about that, but for a variety of reasons, I’d rather actually be hosted by the big blogging service right now. And since Blogger irritates the hell out of me, Typepad it is. Until I get sick of that one.

Whether its WordPress.org OR Typepad, both are blogs being hosted by the respective companies, and so you’ll be at their mercy in regards to features, functionality, design etc. The best blog engine really is WordPress….but their standalone version which is via WordPress.org, not the .com one you currently have.

The standalone versions of either WordPress OR Typepad require moving all your content and paying for hosting of this content utilising their blog engine. It’s only then that you’ll have true feature control and allows you have a cool, customised design.

I wasn’t at all happy when those “related” links showed up on one of my posts. Especially as it was pro-diet propaganda. I thought I had been hacked into (as someone else on the fatosphere notes was a while back with all the p0rn links that added onto the end of her posts). I was quite happy with WP until recently…

Yeah, I don’t like the direction WordPress have gone in recently, although I do think I will keep my blog there at the moment.

This particular upgrade cheeses me off because the “possibly” in “possibly related” is far too tenuous for my liking. Given the stuff the fatosphere posts on regularly, the links are all either diet remedies, sefl-hating monologues, triumphant crowing about weight lost or hate speech against fat people. I don’t want to give traffic to posts like that or receive traffic from them.

I think it is where they upgraded to the 2.5. Mine had a wierd sidebar for a while but ONLY on the front page (looks like this is your issue as well since the sidebar is fine on the post page) too and when I emailed them they said it was an image…they said to make it where you only show 1 post on the front page at a time and scroll through…but I found when I would make it where one certain post (without pictures) would show on the main page it did that. I just deleted the post (it was important anyway) and that fixed it. It only did that AFTER they updated to the 2.5.

You could also host your own WordPress, on your server, which is what I do. It’s very easy to set up, and you get the sweet features of WordPress without the weird ones which show up on wordpress.com hosted blogs. Having used both Movable Type and WordPress, I have to say that I am generally happier with WordPress, as a platform. Just my two cents.
