If you missed The Glamazons on America’s Got Talent last night (as I did, on account of not knowing there was a show called America’s Got Talent), please go check out this clip.
Seriously, you have to go watch, if only to see the hamster wheel in The Hoff’s head turn as he thinks, “I have gathered that I am supposed to act as if I enjoy seeing fat women onstage in their underwear, and so I shall I grin while awkwardly bobbing my head and looking very much like the world’s least cool dad chaperoning a junior high dance, but I FIND THIS DEEPLY CONFUSING.”
Here’s the best part: the judges’ comments were all POSITIVE. Even the Hoff only snuck in one backhanded compliment, I hear.
And here’s the even better part: 95% of the comments on that clip are also POSITIVE at this writing.
Now that I know this show exists, I totally want these girls to win it all.
Also, when you’re done watching, you can go over to my MySpace page and listen to their fat girl anthem, “Shakit.”
I cheered out loud when Piers Morgan started his comments by admitting that he appreciated larger women and was immediately attracted to them before they started singing.
The minute they were on the stage my husband said, “I so want these women to do well.” We were prepared for yet another fat joke at their expense but they kicked serious ass.
They sang beautifully and were gorgeous. I particularly enjoyed the comment from a confused commenter who was “distracted” by the fat women in underwear. Well, yeah, those are HOT women. Of course, you are distracted.
Very attractive women who are also talented as well. I’m glad I got to see a clip of them for the second time (I saw another one when they were at Club Bounce).
Thanks again Kate.
Thanks for the video link!
I loved it, and after “Hot!” my second thought was “this is MeMe Roth’s worst nightmare!”
speaking of what’s on TV…
Anyone take a gander at the joke that was
Shaq’s Big Challenge last night?
These women are great, sexy, talented. (can’t listen with the sound on, no speakers). Did any of the judges use the word FAT?
They’re not fat, imo, not that anything would change if they were (they’d still be just as sexy, talented, great). But is this what society considers fat these days? sheesh. I just think they look healthy and not starving.
Well, I imagine that if you too spent years cavorting with too-thin women with overly-large boobs spilling out of their too-small bathing suits, you just might feel confused when you see a woman with curves dancing on stage.
I was certainly impressed by the judges reactions (although it still irks me that Piers thinks his personal sexual preferences are part of the judging criteria, but that’s another issue) and really enjoyed the first half of their performance. The second half got a little painful, imo, but that’s probably more the fault of that dreadful song than of the group themselves. I’m certainly looking forward to seeing them again!
Agreed with Madge, they’re probably closer to average-size than fat, but geesh, in a world where even Norah Jones is asked to lose weight for a movie role (!!), anything that nudges the acceptability needle over a bit is worth celebrating. Furthermore, as a singer myself I really believe being of larger build can give more richness of tone (as is certainly demonstrated here), and that’s something the music business keeps forgetting in limiting its female-singer roster to size 4 and smaller.
As a fat chick who sings (Opera, I’m sooo the stereotype) I am excited to see these chicks being sexy, and strutting their stuff.
However, Wow were they out of tune. I’ll have to listen to some of their other stuff because this was (hopefully) just a nerves/venue/one time issue…… but first I need to go wash out my ears.
Thanks, Shinobi, I thought that I was imagining the “out of tune” thing. Glad to hear that someone with a trained ear got the same thing. :)
Other than that, I loved the performance.
BBW: Big Beautiful Women.
I’m really thrilled to see all the fatties being respresented and passed through on this show. They are not being ridiculed, mocked or made fun of. I agree that these girls were off the mark musically, they were quite off several times, but they had a great look, a great stage presence and pulled it off. There have been two individual fat men and a group of three fat men (all singers who were not flat and did a great job) who have all been sent on to the finals. The finals will begin airing in two weeks so stay tuned! If I remember this show correctly from last season, the viewing public gets to vote for the winners. I’m very proud of every one of them!
Looking forward, Peggy
It sounded like there was one in particular who had a little trouble with pitch on the higher notes, now that I listen again. But you know, they’re so charismatic it’s easy to forget that! (On recordings, of course, that sort of thing can be fixed pretty easily.) And “Shakit” is great fun!
