If you mean the whole post, please don’t. You’re welcome to quote the post and link here, but I’ve seen a couple of people reposting my blog entries whole, and that’s not cool. There are already people confusing me with Joy Nash because of a plain old link; as flattering as that is, I don’t need any more confusion about who wrote what.

I’m considering putting this on my myspace somewhere:

1) We should not base our self-worth on what men find attractive.
2) However, many women base their LACK of self-worth on what men find attractive.
3) Therefore, it is still important for men who resist the societal mandates on what they may and may not find attractive to make themselves heard. It’s an important contribution to the body-positivity movement, because it takes away one of the weapons with which women (well, straight women) have been torturing themselves.

It’s interesting, because part of me says that these ads are wrong on three levels: 1) Fatphobia. 2) They imply that women should base their body image on what men find attractive. 3) There are actually men in the world who find the women in those ads, and fat women in real life, attractive. My husband is one of them, and it annoys me that there are people out there who basically say that our relationship is a mathematic impossibility because of the size of my ass.

But are bullet points 2 and 3 incompatible? We shouldn’t base our ideal body on what men want, and by the way there are plenty of men who *do* want women who look like the women in the ads? I’m not sure I’ve heard anyone aside from myself voice these two thoughts together (I’m questioning the direction in which my brain went), but it’s interesting to think about.
