Wow. I've been spending a chilled-out Saturday evening reading through the archives (after a lovely second date with a nice bloke, which is coming a whole year or even three after the last time I dated, and I'm oh-so-luckily revisiting all those fun insecurities that come up when I date) and I think this is what I was meant to read. It's like a lightbulb just went fucking ON.

Especially what Colleen wrote: "i am trying really hard to stop holding every man i meet accountable for all the affection and validation that i needed but never got. it’s a completely unreasonable demand."

YES. YES. YES.

And this one piece may be the entire reason I've been reading archives today. Because, you're right, they did have a responsibility in the first place and I don't ever have to say they didn't. I'm not still not sure how I'm going to deal with the inevitable "I'm turning into my mother" bullshit without being pissed for sending me down that path, but maybe I can just tell her to keep her problems to herself, stop trusting her, and go on about my business.
